Amid the corona virus pandemic we have seen a lot of commotion and chaos in the past. Given the novelty of the virus there is not much data to support what sort of guidelines and preventive measures to follow. However, as the cases continue to rise, the scientists world over have got down to research and analyze all the available data to help and inform masses as how to protect themselves against this virus.

Similarly, there has been a lot of differing guidelines in the past with respect to wearing masks. Initially the idea of wearing masks was not supported. However, with the recent guidelines as provided by CDC things are pretty much clearer.

CDC recommendations regarding wearing masks: -

CDC recommends that people should wear masks when they are in public places. These masks should be made of cloth or be any form of face covering. The idea is to contain the virus from spreading. The wearer could be an asymptomatic spreader of the virus. Hence everyone else in the public must be protected from his germs. The masks should be worn in places like grocery stores, religious centers, banks, hospitals and pharmacies. Special care must be taken in closed places having limited ventilation facilities. These places have high risk of spreading the virus through the emission of infected droplets. It must be noted that children below two years of age must not wear cloth mask. Similarly those who have breathing problems or are unable to remove mask without assistance should also avoid wearing cloth mask.

CDC recommends strongly against wearing surgical or highly complex N95 masks for social distancing. These expensive masks are critical medical supplies which are already in shortage world over. Therefore, these masks must be reserved for the front line fighters, the health care workers who are battling against the pandemic risking their lives. Due to shortage of these specialized masks health care workers all around the globe are forced to use cloth masks that are not sufficient to protect them against the pandemic. They are reported to be making masks out of cloth and PPE out of trash bags. This is really hazardous for such workers who are exposed to the risk at maximum.
